How to Reduce Your TANGEDCO Bill to Zero with a Rooftop Solar Plant

Every summer in Chennai, we all watch our TANGEDCO bills climb higher and higher. Running the AC feels less like comfort and more like a luxury. But what if you could not only reduce your bill, but bring it down to zero, or even get paid by TANGEDCO?

It’s not a gimmick. It’s a proven technology called On-Grid Solar, and it works through a TANGEDCO policy called “Net Metering.”

As power experts who have been helping Chennai residents with energy solutions since 1999, here’s how it works.

The Magic of Net Metering

When you install an on-grid solar plant, you are still connected to the TANGEDCO grid. This is the key.

Your new solar “net meter” is a bi-directional (two-way) meter. It tracks two things:

  1. Import: The electricity you pull from the TANGEDCO grid (at night, or on cloudy days).
  2. Export: The extra electricity your solar panels produce that you send back to the TANGEDCO grid.

At the end of the month, your bill is calculated on the “net” amount.

Your Bill = (Units Imported) – (Units Exported)

A Simple Example

Let’s say your home uses 500 units of electricity in a month.

  • You install a 5kW solar plant. During the day, your plant generates 600 units of power.
  • Your house uses 300 units of this solar power directly (for free!).
  • The extra 300 units are automatically exported to the TANGEDCO grid.
  • At night, you import 200 units from the grid to run your lights, fridge, etc.

Your TANGEDCO Bill Calculation:

  • Total Units Imported: 200
  • Total Units Exported: 300
  • Net Bill: 200 – 300 = -100 Units

Your bill is not just zero you have a credit of 100 units that TANGEDCO will pay you for or roll over to the next month!

So, Can You Really Get a Zero Bill?

Yes, absolutely. The key is “right-sizing” your system.

At RJSolars, our first step is to analyze your TANGEDCO bills. We look at your average monthly consumption to determine the perfect-sized solar plant.

  • Low Consumption (150-300 units/month): A 2kW to 3kW system is often perfect. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy (up to ₹78,000) is designed for this and makes the investment incredibly smart.
  • High Consumption (500+ units/month): A 5kW or 10kW system might be needed to offset your entire bill.

The RJSolars Advantage

Don’t just buy panels. Invest in a system designed by power experts. As authorized distributors for Microtek, Growatt, and Waree, we don’t just install we engineer a complete solution. We use premium JSW structures and Schneider/ABB protection devices to ensure your 25-year asset is safe and productive.

Stop “renting” your electricity from the grid. It’s time to own your power.
